When unclogging a sink with a garbage disposal confirm that the unit is not the problem as soon as possible.
Clogged sink disposal both sides.
With a double sink unit one of your sinks will house a garbage disposal.
Fill that sink about a quarter full and plug it.
In a double basin sink when it s only the disposer basin that backs up with water the likelihood is that the drain fitting on the disposer is clogged.
Run your garbage disposal and see if the water begins to clear.
You shouldn t use a plunger on that side of the double sink.
Activate the reset switch at the side or on the bottom of the unit.
Remove the plunger and the plug from both sides and see if the water in the sink begins to drain after this action.
Start by using a sink plunger if your kitchen sink is clogged.
If this does not fix the clog in your kitchen sink try doing the same action again but on the opposite sides.
If the above steps fall short or you have a double sink with both sides stopped up there s a good chance that the clog is located in the trap the u shaped portion of your sink s drainage pipe.
If both sides of your kitchen sink are filling up with water clog up the sink drain on the side without the disposal.
Turn on the garbage disposal.
If the clog is in the disposal running it may break it up.
Now fill the other sink about a quarter full of water as well.
If the disposal is not running check to see if it has overheated.
